3 Types of Garage Door Openers

Jun 27, 2023

A garage door opener is a device that can operate and control the opening and closing of a garage door. The door consists of a motorized mechanism that generates the necessary force to raise or lower the door. Various types of garage door openers exist, including the following.

1. Chain Drive

A chain drive garage door opener operates through a metal chain that connects to a motor and pulley system. When activated, the motor powers the chain, which pulls or pushes the door along its tracks, allowing it to open or close.

The metal chain is strong and capable of handling heavy doors. It can effectively lift and lower the garage door with ease. However, it may produce more noise compared to other types of openers due to the metal-on-metal contact of the chain and pulleys.

Chain drive openers provide a robust solution for homeowners who prioritize functionality and affordability. The openers are also suitable for most garage doors, including single-car and double-car doors.

2. Belt Drive

A belt drive garage opener consists of a motorized unit that controls the door's opening and closing through a reinforced belt. This belt loops around 2 pulleys and connects the motor to the door.

When the garage door opener is activated, the motor rotates, which in turn causes the belt to move. As the belt moves, the rotational force transfers to the pulleys, causing the door to either open or close depending on the desired action.

Belt drive openers are known for their quiet operation due to using a flexible belt instead of a chain. The belt absorbs vibrations and noise, resulting in smoother and quieter door movements than chain-driven openers. This makes them particularly suitable for homes where a noisy garage door operation may cause disturbances.

3. Jackshaft

This type of opener consists of a motorized unit that is mounted on the wall beside the door with a shaft extending from it to the door's torsion spring system.

One of the key advantages of a jackshaft opener is its space-saving design. Mounting the opener on the wall frees up overhead space in the garage, allowing for more storage or taller vehicles. Additionally, you can install the opener in situations where the ceiling is obstructed or lacks sufficient structural support.
